Adsorption mechanisms, structures, and growth regimes of an archetypal self-assembling system: Decanethiol on Au„111..

چکیده
We present a study using several techniques of the growth of decanethiol monolayers deposited on singlecrystal gold surfaces. Through independent measurements of coverage, energetics, and structure as a function of the growth rate and temperature, we provide a quantitative, in-depth description of the molecular processes by which these aliphatic molecules ‘‘self-assemble’’ into highly ordered structures in the absence of a solvent. We find that the multiple-energy scales present in these systems produce distinct adsorption mechanisms, structures, and growth regimes, indicating a complexity that is likely to be a general characteristic of this broad class of self-assembling systems. @S0163-1829~98!03019-7#

Growth kinetics of decanethiol monolayers self-assembled on Au(111) by molecular beam deposition: An atomic beam diffraction study
A low-energy atom diffraction study of the self-assembly of decanethiol on Au(111) is presented that includes both the growth kinetics and the adsorption energetics for this model system of soft/hard interfaces. Initial dosing on bare gold very rapidly forms the known low-density, lying-down, striped monolayer with a sticking coefficient close to unity. Further dosing results in an intermediate...
متن کاملElectrochemical Oxidative Adsorption and Reductive Desorption of the Self-Assembled Monolayer of Decanethiol on Au(111) Surface in KOH Ethanol Solution
The electrochemical characteristics of an Au(111) electrode were investigated in 0.1 M KOH ethanol solutions containing various concentrations of decanethiol. Anodic and cathodic peaks corresponding to the oxidative adsorption and reductive desorption, respectively, of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of decanethiol were observed. Both peaks negatively shifted with the increase in the thiol con...
متن کاملOrganic semiconducting thin film growth on an organic substrate: 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride on a monolayer of decanethiol self-assembled on Au„111..
We use surface x-ray diffraction to study the structure of organic-organic heterojunctions grown by organic molecular-beam deposition. In particular, we study films of 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride ~PTCDA! grown on a decanethiol self-assembled monolayer ~SAM! on a Au~111! surface. The deposition of several ('16) monolayers of PTCDA results in unstrained crystalline films whose ~0...

Electrochemical oxidative adsorption and reductive desorption of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of decanethiol on a Au(111) single crystal electrode were examined in 0.1 M KOH ethanol solution containing various concentrations of decanethiol ranging from 1 muM to 1 mM. Anodic and cathodic current peaks corresponding to the adsorption and desorption of decanethiol, respectively, were observed ...
متن کاملOn the structure and evolution of the buried S/Au interface in self-assembled monolayers: X-ray standing wave results
We describe a structural study of the S/Au interface for decanethiol monolayers (C10) on a Au(111) surface using the technique of X-ray standing waves ( XSWs). The XSW results for full-coverage monolayers are inconsistent with any model incorporating a single sulfur adsorption site, such as the widely assumed threefold hollow site on the Au(111) surface. Instead, the XSW results reveal two dist...
